Going from 3:45 to 3:73 rear, is there a significant loss of top end performance? Trying to decide if putting in 3:73 gears is the way to go to complement my other mods.
I don't think you notice that big of a difference between your old ratio and the 3:73. IMO you might consider a HP enhancer instead.....depends on what your after I guess.
The 3.73's are the gears of choice over at the ford camp (when i had a mustang). It seemed to be a good compromised between what the car came with and going "too" short (i.e. 4.11's). The 4.11's almost seem "too short" when you're making ridiculous power (more than 500-550rwhp). This is why the ford guys like 3.73's in the mustang, get's the car going but wont blow the tires off
Although, these cars are definitely geared differently and that 6th gear certainly helps.
A lot of people are concerned about the "top-end", tell me, how often do you plan on going past 160mph? If not often than you won't miss the slight difference on the top-end if you go with 3.73's or (4.11's).....

I still rip tires too much even dropping to 3.54s from (broken) 3.73s.
Now I wish I had gone to at least 3.36; maybe 3.07.
My rear end guy said the lower ratios have more contact area for the teeth, which helps them handle the power AND last longer. I opted for cryo treatment in addition to the gear set he chose for more contact area (sorry, don't have the manf).
either go with 4.10's or don't change
3.73's will feel almost the same as going from a 26.1 rear tire to a 25.5 --- not much of a difference
especially with a ZF6
95 6 speed here. Added 4:10s this past winter. I researched and the majority of people said go with the 4:10s. The majority was right!! Go with the 4:10s.
Thiis is a lot to digest, folks; thanks for all the feed back. I was offered a swap to 4:10 a while back by a very reputable forum member.
He also gave me some advise about the swap. He said the Lt4 would be a beast if you add the 4:10 gears. If I go with 4:10 gears I will hold on to my 3:45 so as to be able to go back to stock. Now, to find someone who wants to get rid of 4:10's.

I was just recently talking with a Camaro owner that said he went from aa 3:42 to a 3:73 and stated there was not much of a difference, and wishes he went with a 4:11...... I would go with the 4:11 myself.
I had 4.10's in my car it was great for a somewhat stock motor with headers up until you put some horsepower in the car then I was having to shift to 5th gear to finish the 1/4 mile and that killed my time. I have 3.73 now and love it but also have lots of power now.
I just went to 3.73s from my 3.33's and I can even tell on the city streets as well as highway the difference. I'm glad I didn't go 4.11s as I'm blowing the tires off now in 2nd at about 40mph. I do have a 6spd

Our cars are 5 speeds with a fuel economy 6th. 3.45s are a compromise for best all around gear. 3.73s are the best in my opinion. I had 4.10s. hated it. I have 3.75s now but wish I stayed 4.10s only because my motor went 8k. It was risky enough doing datalog runs in 4th gear to 8k with a 26.2 rear tire 10x a night and 5 more for fun 5th was only good for me for top speed runs and with a peak torque at 5800 rpms 6th was absolutely useless unless I planned on cruising at 180 mph.
