Default Hard starting?

Could a crappy (new, but Fram) fuel filter cause a hard starting problem?

Have to crank the engine for about 10-15 seconds when cold to get it to start, seems OK when hot.

Not much else changed recently but don't want to replace fuel filter if not needed or something else could be the cause. Thanks!

Check the fuel pressure.

What year is your car? Definitely check the fuel pressure, it's always possible the filter screwed up inside. Or put the old one back on and see what happens.

My 86 has the same symptoms, 10 -15 seconds or more before starting, but after warmup, fine.
do you have a bogging when you hit the gas pedal?

I am still searching for the solution.

Symptoms fit a blown fuel pump relay.

Do you hear the fuel pump run briefly when you turn the key from off to run (but not start)?

If not, the fuel pump is being powered via the oil pressure switch once 5 PSI oil pressure is developed from the cranking.

I seriously doubt the new filter is the issue even though it is a Fram.

Check fuel pressure before changing anything. Changing the relay is a hassle.

Put a guage on test port and turn key on, see if pressure comes up right away. Try 2 or 3 times if pressure come up every time the relay is probably ok.

Check to see if pressure holds after key is turned off. If pressure drops off start trouble shooting. If you have an FSM there is a procedure for testing this problem. If you need to start swapping parts, I would start with the FP Regulator it is the easiest thing replace (10 mins tops). It also could be a leaking injector (fairly easy to check and free) or bad fuel pump (harder and more expensive).

I just worked my way through this and it turned out to be the regulator very easy to change.

for all the tips, I have new injectors on the car this year, and replaced the regulator too -- never suspected it could be the problem, but isn't that way more than a 10 minute job on my '91 L98?

not encouraging but still at least I'm not the only one LOL

I haven't noticed bogging but I don't usually drive the car right off a cold start anyhow I normally give it at least a few minutes...

Yes. If it holds pressure, as it should, fuel will squirt out so be ready to mop it up (you may want a cool engine).
