I cant find it. Horn does not work, started it once, now nothing happens at all.starter, fuel pump fine, car sat a long time due to this issue, got it free.

see in Chilton there is a relay and theft module, but though vats was later in gm life?

can someone tell me how to get to the relay or a way to by pass it?

I would appreciate any good description/pics, instructions. Send you a diagnosis fee via paypal!!!!

From what I have read, I believe that there is a fuse behind the info center that will disable the security system. I've never had the issue so I can't tell you first hand. There is info about this issue here, just gotta use the search.

Is there power to the small purple wire on the starter when the key is in the "Start" position? VATS reads the resistance of a pellet embedded in the key to prevent the wrong key from starting the car. 1984 IS pre-VATS, but there is still a theft deterrent system on the car. Somewhere on this new computer, they should have transferred my links and files to the starter wiring schematic for the 1984. If you don't have access to a FSM, you should buy one if you plan to keep the car and continue working on it.

I have a .pdf copy of the starter wiring schematic, but I don't know how to post it here.

RACE ON!!!

Hey juniorbat,
I picked up my 86 pretty cheap for the same reason, sat for quite awhile. At first i was having power issues, would'nt start, then it would, etc. I saved myself ALOT of time by going over the basics TWICE. I found that the brand new battery i put in was not grounded to the chassis properly, There was some sort of self tap screw, that had rotted. Bad connection. Also, The cable coming off the positive batt. terminal was cut, and TAPED together. The first time around, i had taken for granted, that because it "disappeared" down into the engine compartment, and was tightly connected to the brand new starter, that it was intact. Forgive me if my suggestions are a little low brow, but i'm assuming you are, like myself, an amature motorhead. If you're past all this, forgive me, but, i suggest you attack that thing one more time with a wire brush, and multi-meter, who knows, you might get lucky. Hope this helps.

Mike

Mike, not an insult, even motorheads sometimes forget basics, I have before and ran my resto shop for 12 years, but only did 55-74ish stuff. I never liked 75-82 stuff, and never ever wanted to mess on cars that had electronics controlling the motor and tranny. So this is new to me, I have a 2002 Ws6 that I studied specifically under a gm tech to repair so I would not be raped, but I just dont own or work on electronics alot.

I know my grounds are good, replaced them ALL. I know neutral safety is good, column and ignition switch good. No horn, security light, and all happening after getting it started then shutting off and shutting door, keep coming up on searches as a security issue.
Plus it sat and given away for the reason, so its a "default" in the car that apparently is a mass issue, so I am still leaning to the security feature.

I do get power to purple wire though with key in start which I cant understand, because I assume, if the security was killing it, I wouldnt? Kinda wishing I had said no, its b ugging the hell out of me, and already had two previous c4 owners come try to help.

The interupt relay stops the power from the purple wire before reaching the starter solenoid. The interupt relay is located in your console and is harnessed over to the controller so its pretty close, might be on the backside of the panel holding the console up. It should have 4 wires , a large purple . 2 large dk green/white and a tiny dk green. You should be able to bypass by putting a jumper between 1 of the large dk green/white and the large purple. Good Luck ( I answered your question in C3 but after someone joked with you and rubbed you the wrong way , I believe he was just joking around. )

Oh, got it running, or somewhat, fuel pump barely buzzing , have not tested the pressure, but sure its not up to par, and going to find the regulator, assume they had one, and see if its leaking all over the palce. I got a chiltons but it wasnt very helpful on the location of the theft stuff.

The removing the fuse fixed it , so thanks for the tip.

Fuel pressure regulator in located at the front of the rear throttle body. Remove the tower for the injector and its underneath that. Fuel pressure should be between 9-13 psi.
The chilton book to me is pretty much worthless. If you can get the helms FSM that would be the way to go.
