I have an Art Carr built 700R4 transmission that was built about 16K ago. Here's the problem. The transmission shifts great under normal driving conditions. There are no wierd noises or other signs of wear, etc. The problem only shows itself under heavy throttle. The tranny shifts pretty stoutly from 1st to 2nd, but 2nd - 3rd, and 3rd - 4th are delayed with the engine revving out of control for a second or two before the transmission finally settles into gear. This thing just doesn't "hit" when you shift it.
Is this something that the installation of a shift kit might remedy, or am I looking at worn out internals? I 'guesstimate' that I'm making right at 400 horsepower with my current setup, which might or might not be too much for the 700R4 to handle.
My second question would be, when the time comes to replace this tranny, is there a more 'bulletproof' overdrive auto transmission that might suit higher output situations better than the 700R4? I'm open to all suggestions. Thanks :)
Sounds like your TV cable might need adjusting, a broke motor mount can also give symtoms of misadjusted TV. How does it shift if you manually shift from 2nd to D and D to OD?
I've never adjusted the TV cable myself. Is it a PITA, or can it be done relatively simply?
You don't need any tools to adjust the TV. There is another recent post that details how its done, but the basics is you depress the "D" shape button and slide cable to reach proper adjustment. If I remember right sliding the cable towards firewall will increase line pressure (higher pressure=firmer shifts)
Sounds like a leaky valve maybe, not making quite enough pressure to slam the gear into fourth. A shift kit would help, but I don't think it will fix it.
As for a stronger Transmission, a TurboHydramatic 200 R4 is what the GN guys use, when built right they'll stand up to 1200 hp. Don't know how hard it would be to put one in a Corbette though. The gear ratios are awesome too, something like 2.3, 1.55, 1.00, 0.75 I think...wait, that might be the 4L80...anywho, they're closer than the 700's.
