Default Transmission Cooler...

I am getting a Yank 2800 Converter put on today. Will I need a transmission cooler? Do I already have one on the car? I think I saw one but how good is it and should I buy a second? I understand it would be beneficial, but how long can I go after this instal before I should put one in?

It would be beneficial. Did you get in on the GP? How come I haven't received mine yet?

I would. I have a Jet 2800 stall converter, and during the winter (50+ degrees) I was seeing about 210 degrees. The summer would be murder so I installed a cooler.

Cost was only $80 and its easy to install, although it did take me about 3 and a half hours the first time.

Not sure about your car, but 87 has a cooler that runs into the radiator, down the pax-side tank, and out the bottom of the radiator, almost no cooling ability what-so-ever.

A lot has to do with the size of the converter, as you go smaller in diameter there is less fluid available, which causes higher temps. Power braking can also cause extreme heat. Bumper to bumper traffic also causes heat build up. You want the ATF to reach operating temp, but not overheat. I'd call the place you purchased the converter from and ask for their advice.

your car already has a cooler, however if you are going to a 2800 converter, an aftermarket cooler is a MUST.. I have a 26,000 lb cooler installed between the radiator, & air conditioner condenser, & in heavy traffic, my trans never goes over 190..

It very cheap insurance to an expensive repair.... get the largest one you can fit.. mine was app 10" x 18" x 3/4" thick..

John - what cooler are you running and would you recommend it? Did you install it yourself? If not, how much did the install run? Thanks! :)

I got my cooler at CarQuest.. its is the 2nd largest one they have, its rated for towing 26,000 lb.. Ralph & I did it (mostly Ralph) :)

The cooler cost app $70 + maybe $10 for extra hose & clamps...Ralph & I did it in about 2-3 hrs. If you get a smaller one you can mount it directly to the power steering cooler, but if you do this MOUNT IT as HIGH as you can... My first one that I had mounted there was crushed by a rock on the Tappan Zee Bridge..

Also with the small cooler, & my 2800 converter, I was still getting high trans temps in traffic, or going UP long hills in hot weather..

With this new larger cooler, we mounted it TO the air conditioning condenser... it is actually BETWEEN the radiator & condenser..

To hook it up is easy, just connect the hoses to the factory cooler, (use them both) the BIG PIA is getting your hand between the radiator, & condenser to mount the new cooler... we had to struggle but it CAN be done... & the larger cooler is worth all the work to install it... today in 45 deg weather my temp never went over 140

In the summer its around 190 deg TOPS..

190 going up hills or in traffic. If so i'm sold .

So you have tranny fluid running through the factory cooler too?

I'm guessing a 26,000lbs should be fine for a 3,000rpm converter too. Hopefully not much more heat.

Yes I am using both coolers the factory one & the 26,000 lb one I got from CarQuest.. & it will be fine for a 3000 converter... no prob at all.

By factory cooler, are you referring to the trans cooler lines going into the radiator or does the newer models have an optional cooler as well?

My 96 has cooler lines running right into the radiator, I just hooked the new cooler up to these lines so I have both coolers working, the new aftermarket one, & the GM cooler that it built into the radiator..

Red96Coupe....Why did you choose to put it between the rad and AC core instead of in front of the AC where it would get the "coldest" air flow ??

My Aftermarket trans cooler is in front of the A/C cooler and tied into the radiator cooler. The radiator portion of the cooler actually warms the trans fluid for cold start up. I was suprised to see that the optional oil cooler, that I ordered with the car new, is also a warmer with warm antifreeze running around it.

Simple reason was John has a BPP air intake on the car and yop don't want to introduce heat in the same area your drawing your cool intake charge form.

Absolutely run an extra cooler. I bought the new B&M Supercooler part # 70264. It's rated at 24,000 GVW and its dimensions are 11" x 6" x 1-1/2". These new type coolers are supposed to cool alot better than the fin & tube type. Check them out, I got mine from Summit Racing for $50 and they come with everything you need for the installation.

Yeah, I figure ill get one soon. Was just wondering, cuz Yank says that you shouldnt have to worry about one unless you got 3000+ stall. But ill get one just to be safe.
Thnx

I just picked up the same unit! I picked it up locally at Checker for $50.00. I was out on Precision Industries site and they say that you don't need an extra cooler with the Vigilante. I'm going to play it safe and use one anyway.

I used the B&M mentioned right above, and found the coolest place to mount it: between the 2 square tubes that go from the engine cross member to the front bumper. placed the cooler flush right between them, at about a 20deg angle to the ground(same as the support tubes) That gets good airflow, just below ps cooler, and the lines are short runs also.
