Default Timing check?

Hey everybody, new to Vettes and to this forum. I have a question about checking/setting the timing on an 84 Crossfire. I know that there is a wire for the EST, and that it's located near the brake booster, and that it must be disconnected to get an accurate read on the timing. But I can't find the tan/black stripe wire anywhere. What does it connect to? I have a Haynes manual the PO gave me, but it's not much help. A good picture would be worth a thousand words.

As way of further introduction, the car is pretty stock except for flowmasters and a performance chip. It has nice ZR-1 wheels with Sumitomos. It runs well except for a lopey idle. There are lots of small issues that I will have to work through, but thats' OK. But this is by far the quickest car I have ever had, and I am happy with it. BTW, it has 66,000 miles.

Thanks,

Dave

Congrats on your purchase! I'll run out and take a picture of mine really quick.

I have an 85, I don't know if there is a difference between the years with the EST wire because of the different motors, but i will take a picture anyways.

Is it hard to adjust timing? I think you have to loosen the distributor and turn it?

When I get mine running again, I'm gonna hope the timing is correct. I believe it is 6 degrees advanced for 89?

Right, I've got a timing light. When I get it running soon I plan to check it. But I figured I'd ask while the thread was fresh if it is hard to adjust the timing if it is off?

Start engine and warm it up so it will idle.
Stop engine, disconnect EST connector , attach timing light, start engine and check timing. If out stop engine , loosen dist hold down clamp just enough so you can turn dist .Restart engine and turn dist to set timing.Tighten down clamp and don't forget to reconnect the spark control connector

And...after you have reset the timing and reconnected the EST wire, you will probably have to disconnect the battery, turn the headlights on to drain any reserve power to the ECM wait a couple of minutes then re-connect the battery - this will clear any codes set by having the EST disconnected.
