Default quesstion about trans and drive shaft

95 vette ,auto trans,71,500 miles.
I changed my transmission fluid this weekend and was checking everyting out because I here a clunk every now and then.I seem to have some play either in the driveshart splines and the transmission slines where they mesh together or a bearing or something in the rear of the transmission.I have no fluid leak or vibration at highway speeds.
I checked my 220 GMC truck it has no play.

My question is this normal in the vette?
Is there something worn out?

I can't really tell whats wrong untill I drop the exhaust and can get a closer look and I don't wana do that unless I have too.

You may have worn universal jionts on the shafts.
Commonly make clunk when shifting into reverse
Jack rear wheels and shake tire to see if any play in the hubs.
Try to rotate wheel ( in gear , handbrake off ) while looking at halfshaft uni's to see if any play present

My half shafts are fine its where the driveshaft goes into the trany.
I checked the halfshafts weeks ago and the hubs

Spline wear in the output shaft, or yoke are almost unheard of. You likely have a couple of problems stacked up. The tail housing has a bushing, and wear there is common. Because the driveshaft yoke is supported by it, it is likely your problem.

8 inches or so behind the tailhousing bushing is the case bushing that supports the output shaft and rear planet. This bushing is somewhat prone to wear, and is often not changed by a trans builder during an overhaul. If you remove the driveshaft and tailhousing, and the output shaft moves up and down more than 1/8 inch, it is worn.
Hope that is not the case, as total trans breakdown (into subassemblies) is required to change it.

May I ask how do you know that it is where the drive shaft goes into the tranny?. I had this same issue on my 95 auto and it ended up being wear between the hub splines and the wheel bearing even though the bearing itself was fine (and even after it was replaced). Greasing helped for a while but it wasn't until I replaced the fibre washer on the hub that this clunk went away. The clunk came when shifting from park to reverse or park to drive.

Pete K

So if that is the problem, which I think it might be, because it sounded like a clunk was inside the tail when I was shaking it up and down.I guess I will just drive it till it starts leaking or I get a bad vibration.
I will look again just to make sure it's not my u joints

1/8 of an inch is a lot so if it's less than that ir's ok???

Thanks

It is your car, so I have no right to criticize you if you drive it. However, I know from experience just how flammable auto trans fluid is, as I have a few friends and family members that have lost vehicles from an ATF fire. I personally would not wait for a leak, but your call for sure.

In my opinion, 1/8 inch up and down movement is worn, but there is no published number for this bushing wear, so an opinion is all I have to offer.
I am not suggesting your trans bushings are shot, but I am suggesting it may be a problem.

I honestly don't know, as I have not been inside one. The length of the output shaft will greatly affect the amount of wiggle.

Next question I have a corsa exhaust. My Hanes manual only shows a pic of the early C4 with the cat behind the trans tailshaft and there is a sheild to prevent trany fluid from driping in the exhaust.Did my 95 come with a shield over the exhaust at the back of the trany?

I was thinking maybe I should make one in case I ever get a leak.
