Good day today picked up a 6al box off Craigslist for 65.00 looks like new,i wanted to get some thoughts on mount locating, since i've gone to the darkside I'm thinking where the air filter box was located, plenty of room, the car will never be drove in the rain, what do you guys think? http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...Picture340.jpg
I think the location you've chosen is perfect since you don't have an intake assembly to contend with.
My MSD box has been on top of my battery for ages. I've decided to fabricate a custom bracket that will mount it in a level position on top of the support member that extends out from under passenger side hood latch. I bought an MSD mounting kit that includes an L-shaped aluminum plate, and it fits perfectly in this position without touching underneath the closed hood.
I mounted my MSD on an alumimum bracket above the battery. The bracket is fastened to the kickout on the firewall and one end is fastened to the lower quarter panel or vent with two screws at the top. This works well with the optima battery. (NO acid vapor). Short wire runs, cool area under the hood, and full access.
Years ago I installed a breadbox-glovebox in the passenger dash. Looks stock, but is hinged and opens like a glovebox. My 6al has been there for years and I have had no issues.

Since my car is supercharged, I don't have the air cleaner box any more. I mounted mine where it used to be, Just like your first picture. It has worked find in that location for me.
Under the driver's side headlight for me - and they improve throttle response. Unhook it and find out yourself. I also like it for its rev. limiting ability as it cuts spark not fuel.
leave it on the shelf so you don't have to worry about it crapping out on you.
I'm sure most of the problems are owner mistakes, but I will carry a mod.just incase.I'm running it to a GM hei no big cash out lay if it gives me problems.

Winner!
I've sold, installed and used MSD products for 20 years, and 9 times out of 10 it's installer error. The 6AL in particular is a pretty bulletproof box. Of course, there are a lot of "keyboard crewchiefs" that will inject their opinions to the contrary.
MSD ignition amplifiers really come into play with modified engines, with forced induction engines really benefitting. The benefit on stock engines are mostly for fuel quality and/or extended spark plug changes. They will NOT add 10-20 HP to a stock engine by themselves, but allow more aggressive ignition timing (which can make more HP), ESPECIALLY in a carbureted application.
Congrats to the OP for getting a decent deal on a used 6AL, I think you'll like it. (and I mounted mine where the carbon canister used to sit on my '85 - under the headlamp).

Mr Nice,
I ran my 6AL next to my CAI kit on the DS similar to what you are suggesting. I have a couple of rough pics if you want to see my install location. Just pm me your e-mail address.

Here is how mine is "attached" to the car. My mechanic fabricated a bracket and is securely mounted. Mine however, did shoot craps after a couple of years....could have because of heat issues where I chose to locate mine though......don't know for sure if it was my issue due to poor location or a poor product.....
TPIS claims you must run an MSD if make power over 4500 RPM which I do; FWIW....good luck!

I would like an explanation on how the MSD will "allow more aggressive ignition timing". If it knocks without the MSD, what can the MSD do to eliminate the knock other than delay the spark?

Nonsense. I've been running the stock Delco system in my turbocharged 355 for years. Runs smooth, and it's dependable. And, this is on road courses. (It's not just a short 12 or 13 second quarter-mile burst, and then coasting to let the electronics cool off, which seems to be the usage for most MSD units.)
