Default Glue for Plastics

I broke a piece made of plastic on my backup driver. Since I try to minimize cost on that car, it would be nice to glue the piece back together -- but I've never found a glue that works worth a **** on plastic.

Actually, I may not have tried Testor's Model Cement (that I used 40yrs ago as a kid). Obviously, that was for plastic.

Any better ideas (that you've gotten to work)?

This stuff works very well - you can make new tabs, etc. with it, in addition to repairing cracks:

That sounds really good but I never tried it.Thanks,I saved the link to favs!

That said,I have bought a 3M 2 part epoxy mix specified for plastics you can find in just about any auto/hardware store.

I fixed a door side mirror cover made of heavy plastic(off a GM van) that once fell off and split into two pieces when it hit the ground.

I bonded it back together, sanded it smooth, glued it back on the mirror housing and repainted it.4 years later it has not come apart nor fell off.

Guess we all have our favorite....I have found that "Gorilla Glue" works great....It has saved many dollars on those small plastic fittings and such.

I usually use 2 part epoxy, and have used JB Weld with good results.

I've actually used super glue with good results to glue the fan relay mounts to the radiator shroud on my 95. Two drops on the mount and the shroud and clamps to hold it together overnight.

contact 3M and tell them exact type of item you are gluing. They will tell you a product designed specifically for that type of plastic.

Case in point: Years ago, I broke a piece off of an ABS plastic motorcycle ferring. it was the piece that held the ferring to the frame. I went to the 3M wholesale store in my area, and the provided me with an ABS plastic glue/cement. The product worked by essentially cotterizing the two pieces together, and was actually stronger than the original ABS.

I have successfully used JB Weld to repair the center console trim that cracked (if that helps). It handles most things so long as they are rigid and you can let them sit overnight without moving.
