Raw material is just machined then polished. If you want a stronger crank go with a forged product. The bearings are softer than the crank material...using non-technically speak on a properly machined jornals there should be an oil "cushion" in-between the contact points.
OK, thanks! I ask because some european engines have stock cranks that are nitrited and if they are machined they are very soft under that thin coating.
You'd have to do some research to see which of GM's cranks received this hardening process. Some did, but I don't recall which ones or which year cranks received it.
I do recall reading about certain processes GM uses to harden the journals and at least one company (probably more) still offers it. I saw it advertised in one of the mags.
