How much is involved in changing the Opti cap and rotor on a 95 LT-1? Once the idler tensioner is off, its there anything else that needs to be removed? (Water pump maybe?)
yes. you have to remove the pump and balancer. again, if your going in there, replace the entire thing. the cap and rotor will cost you about 150.00 or so, and the entire opti for your vintage is about 220.00!
also, the pump is a weak spot. I would replace it... more so if the mileage is over 60,000 or so.
Yep.. thats what i was looking for. . if i'm in that deep i'll replace everything including the water pump... heck, might even do the cam swap while i'm in there.
I just received the new Mid America catalog that is unique for the C4. The 95-96 opti is priced at 149.99 for a new Delco unit. Older optis are 300 more. I wonder if it is a printing error? FrankLT4CE :blueangel:
If you replace the water pump you might as well go with electric. OEM unit will probably cost you $150 new. The Meziere unit will cost you $200, but it gives you 8 hp at the same time, and when it does eventually quit (which will be as long as longer than the stock pump) it won't puke on your Opti.
where where where!!!I am in need of the entire opti and would like to upgrade to a vented one on my 1993 .I've been quoted some much higher prices pleeeese tell me where to find something decent!
Jeff Kopp (carfan18) is the source for all things GM... he gives GREAT discounts...
you will not want to change over to the vented opti, per sa, because you will have to change the entire front of the motor over... cover, cam gear... all sorts of parts.
however, you can enhance with the existing opti. not hard at all... the GM vent harness is about 10.00!!!! and takes about 30 minutes to modify the cap and opti to make it work. not hard at all.
call jeff at 1-800-728-8267. he is in Kansas, so adjust time accordingly!!! tell him I said "hi"!
I'll give him a call monday!seems he's very well liked on the forum, read nothing but good reviews on parts and service since I've been here. Can he get all GM parts?going to be doing alot of work(wheel bearings, head and intake gaskets ,and brake work! Thanx again!

uh, yes. he can get ALL GM parts... he works for a chevy dealer. he does wholesale part sales.
The 8 HP gain claimed by certain electric water pump mfr's is on a dyno with the pump powered by DC converter and extension cord....or on a 1/4 mi dragstrip with NO alternator and a momentary battery drain. In normal use, the stock pump doesn't consume double digit HP. In addition, an alternator does not generate current for free or even at 100% efficiency to drive an electric pump....similar HP is required. The mechanical pump on a motor is very efficient because it only produces maximum flow (cooling) when the engine's RPM is near redline. You can not eliminate or reduce the approximate 12 HP serpentine belt mechanical losses because the car has a P/S pump. It'd take a complex electrical pump control unit to duplicate the mechanical pump's variable loading feature. The stock setup consumes modest, fractional HP under low RPM steady state cruise while providing just enough flow and resulting HP loss at high RPM. A $150 aftermarket lifetime warranty cap and rotor can make sense under certain situations. IMHO...seal the Opti leaks, don't replace a good pump.
