I have a 1984 and I removed the power antenna because it would no longer go up and down. I have a few questions though...
It has the tubular rivets (hole in the center) that rivet the motor together. I have a rivet gun but have never had to use it for a tubular rivet. Do I need a special gun?
Are there any good places you guys would recommend for the ribbon?
Any tips/suggestions about the rebuild I should know beforehand?
So I got the ribbon from GM and removed the old broken ribbon out of the housing. When I install the new ribbon, it will run up and down but then slip out of the inside spool and cease to work. Anyone ever had this problem?
I would say you don't have the hook set right. I just replaced mine, and it was a pain in the behind to get it spooled right and back into the housing. The ribbon need to be kept tight while spooling it in.
BTW, the directions that came with my GM replacement kit said to disregard the rivets. Just use the clamps.
I was going to rebuild mine recently but someone here on the forum steered me towards a Motorola boat antenna for $40 that you can mount right to the inside of the fender and not worry about powering it. I plan to just seal up the hole in the body, never like it sticking out there.
Here's a link to it. Haven't gotten it yet myself.
