I would not try to spin the stock bottom end above 6200-6300 rpms if you want it to stay together and with a bigger cam, you are going to be temped to do that and may very well have to to make more power then the hotcam will give you.
Myself and a few others have ran in the mid to high 11's with the hotcam, and to be honest, im not seeing any better on a stock bottom end motor.
It can be tuned to pass emissions and the price cant be beat!!
what size rear gear are you running to achieve 11's

I was running 4.09 when it went 11.71, but have gone 11.8x with 3.73 gears. Keep in mind these were ideal weather days.

Easy there, let's keep this educational...

Seriously though, it seems the F-body crowd (where I started out) is willing to push their LT1s much harder than most people here. Maybe GM should have given THEM the 4 bolt mains instead of us?

I won't argue that the hotcam is a good mild cam and does a decent job of waking up an LT1, but if the question is "what's the most aggressive camshaft you can use in a stock head / stock bottom end LT1?" then the hotcam shouldn't really be in the discussion. The lift (with 1.6 rockers) is about right for completely stock LT1 heads, but the ramp rate isn't as steep as other off the shelf cams, and the duration is pretty short compared to what's out there.

I have stock heads (with a valve job and some very mild porting) on a 100% original high mileage bottom end and I chose the Comp Cams 07-503-8, grind #276HR-12. With 1.6 rockers, lift is around .53x/.54x, duration 276/281 @.006, 224/230 @ .050. with an LSA of 112. The spec sheet suggests an RPM range of 1800-5800, but I'd put it more in the 3000-6300 range on my setup. If I ordered the cam custom, I would have asked for a 110 or 109 LSA to get a couple more degrees of overlap, but that would have made it harder to tune, too. To match the cam, I have 1 5/8 long tube headers, less restrictive exhaust, less restrictive air filter setup, 3000 stall converter, 3.73 gears, and a PCMFORLESS tune. Street manners are very tame, but it feels like a totally different car. Had to upgrade tires because the ones that worked on the stock setup didn't have a chance now. Overall, I'm very happy with the way it runs, and glad I didn't let myself get talked into less of a camshaft.

what are you talking about? The OP stated he wanted to keep his stock heads and change the cam. He is not building a new short block. The factory motor is not going to hold up to spinning much past 6300 rpms, let alone spraying it with nitrous.
I really dont care how many years you have been around LT1's and if you think a stock LT1 came with mahle pistons, well, what can I say.
Again, we were talking about a stock LT1 shortblock in the OP's car, and not your Car!!

The above part of your post that I made bold is what I disagree with. IMO you can over cam a stock motor and actually loose power. Again, IMO on a stock bottom end motor the hot cam is ideal. In fact, a stock LT4 is what it was designed for.
I run a very simular setup to yours, and I have run 3.73 gears which cost me roughly 1 tenth in the qtr.
But I have run, at Richmond Dragway, an 1/8 at 7.53 sec. and 92.75 mph. The Qtr was 11.71 at 117.31mph.
I am not trying to say this to be bragging. There are others on here such as Jonescap who runs a stock LT4 with a hotcam, and 4.10 gears, and has ran 11.6x at I believe it was 119mph.
The hotcam is very competive on a stock block motor.

No arguement there. Looks like our disagreement is at what point a stock LT1 is "overcammed." I've seen one with the 847 cam and I think that's certainly too much cam. Sounds really cool at idle, but it wants to spin around 6800+ rpm, which is way beyond what I would spin mine.

But since you say your setup is similar to mine, let me hijack the thread here a little bit and ask, have you tried exhaust cutouts at the track and did they help or hurt or make any difference at all?

what are you talking about.. i am talking about a stock short block.. for starters my car as a 355 had forged speed pro pistons and now it currently has keith black pistons that are also forged. so i obviously wasn't referring to it. stock lt1 pistons are made by mahle.. so introduce yourself to the bottom side of an lt1 piston. also there are many many many f body guys that are putting down 400rwhp that have stock bottom ends and larger cams than hot cams and they are holding together fine.. and spraying on them..

I guess I would say that it is more of a lope it's not really choppy at all. At idle you can tell there is a small cam in there but I drive in stop and go traffic and I've never had any problem with it at all. However with the long tube headers it sounds really nice

And from what I understand, its really hard to get it to pass emissions.

No, I have not tried cutouts, but I have thought about it, or taking the exhaust completely off, and installing 2, 3in turndowns.
I can tell you, I have run the stock exhaust off of the long tube headers, and then switched the mufflers from stock to magnaflow, then removed the resonater, and the best I can tell, based on track times, it makes no difference.

it revs up faster as well. You may want to consider a new tune after the install reguardless of what cam you choose.

True statement. OEM LT4 and LT5 (ZR1) pistons are also made by Mahle.
