I am intrested in getting a cable to attach my laptop to the ALDL plug to help in analyzing problems. Where can I buy the cable and what software should I buy and where can I get it. Thanks.
I made my cable and tried the free winaldl. Some things worked, but not all the features. It really wasn't worth it. I'm interested to see what you do and hear what you find out.

Here you go. http://www.aldlcable.com I used this one along with the free WINALDL software and it all works well for me.

You might want to go back and make sure that you have the jumper pins setup correctly. When I first installed mine, I did not have access to all the features. In the troubleshooting process I found out that I did not have the jumpers set right. Once I corectly set the jumpers, the software was full featured and worked great. Check it out...
Thanks for the information. I have a 1985 and I understand not all data is available, eg timing, out of the computer because it is so small. Thought I would give it a try.

Now you guys got me curious what I will see. I figure for $60 it is worth a try. Who knows, maybe this will give me incentive to start to try to do my own custom tunes!

I'll check it out. Maybe the features I was looking for weren't listed. I just don't remember b/c it has been so long. The cable I made is so old it is a serial cable. I was looking for knock count, tcc function, and data logging.
I'm thinking in buying the ALDL cable and use the WinALDL software. I have an old laptop with Win98. It has either USB and RS232, but I don't know if I would have to buy the RS232 ALDL cable or the USB one for my laptop.
What cable do you recommend to me?
Another question... is dangerous to use the WinALDL software? I hope it only can do diagnostics but not reprogram the PROM. I like the car electronic systems, but if it's dangerous to use I won't probe it.

Thanks and cheers!
I'm pretty sure it just reads diagnostics. I think to reprogram the PROM you have to physically remove it and put it on a "chip eraser" then when you reprogram it you have to put it on a "chip burner".
For an 86 you definitely have to pull the chip to make changes some LT1s using OBDII could do changes on board but I'm not very familiar with that or the difficulty of it. You'll be fine.
