What does everyone like, MSD? Accel? I am going to install new plugs/wires/hypertech coil and new cap/rotor just to be on the right direction this season.
I have Accel 8.8's on now that have been since the LPE conversion back in 1997(31K ago). They probably don't need to be changed...but the heck with it.
I measured the resistance of every wire in my MSD set, and they were right on! Advertised as 40-50ohms of resistance per foot and not one of them were over 45.

Re: PLUG WIRES (JD 90 383)
The short answer:
Taylor for good value / performance
Moroso is a good wire with some added heat resistance for your headers, but not that much heat resistance.
Magnacore makes a great all out performance wire. Bet even the best does not 1/4 better then Taylor.
Orginal OEM wires were decent, latest Packard / Delco's I bought were junk.
You will no doubt get a huge amount of posts about resistance / length of wire. This has nothing to do with performance, as your ignition "looks" at impedance, not resistance. Furthermore, beyond 25kV there are other factors involved with the secondary wires that are not measured. Forget resistance measurements, they have nothing to do with performance.
I have been running the Taylors. They were about 40 bucks for the custom fit ones and fit fine, even had the 45 degree angled boot for the one cylinder on the passenger side (number 6, if memory serves). I put in new plugs, wires and cap/rotor, so I couldn't tell you if there was a difference, and there shouldn't be, only rice boys think there's a great difference with wires. One decent brand will be comparable to another.
Either way, they must be a lot better than my old ones, AC Delco OEM wires. Original equipment from the factory? Maybe, my car has spent it's entire 16 years in Japan and AC Delco parts aren't exactly at the nearest parts stores, or even the further parts stores. The cap and rotor were almost surely the originals, as they were Delco and completely worn out. The plugs looked healthy, but could have been older than the hills.
Overall, the tuneup helped more than anything I've done to the car. I'll put it this way, doing the plugs, wires, cap and rotor felt like the equivilent of my getting out of my mom's V6 4th gen Firebird and getting into my 97 Trans Am.
Hey JD,
Dont know much about MSD but doesnt sound like you can go wrong with them.Theyve been making their sheehit for years eh?
I also tried magnecores but too fat and a beeotch to install.I bought them while visiting LPE 3 years ago...had to take a razor blade to skim the end boots so they would fit on my dist cap.
Wouldnt use them again..one kept popping off after some miles.
Im using Livewires now and like them alot..fit was excellent and theyre numbered on each end and have a pretty nice red web- like sleeve over the wires.Cost me close to 100 bucks for them but so far so good.
More pretty to look at then anything.
Just wanted to pass that along.
I think most stuff on the market is pretty good today...heck I even bought my tune up wires and plugs from good ole wal mart for my driver car and she runs great now.
Saved money there...
:)
Yeah the MSD's seem to be the popular choice. The guy doing the work likes stock GM. I don't agree. The magnecors are on my friends 434/IROC, they seem OK for His application. Clearance isn't as much of a problem on His as it is with my headers(#8 plug can ONLY be accessed from underneath) so hopefully the MSD's will be alright. Less 'Spensive than the Magnecors too.
Scorp was breaking my stones about them only coming in RED :D this is ok by me.
Ordered the hypertech coil kit from the forum GP section. MSD Wires, and wire looms in red to match the wires. Just got back from Auto Zone getting the FR5Ls plugs.
Things should touch down in around three or so days. Hope to do the stuff this weekend.
