Default transmission fluid change

I want to change the transmission fluid in my 94 LT1. I want to get as much old fluid out as possible. I know you can pump fluid out via the transmission cooler line. When I do that - can I then drop the pan and replace the filter? Or should I drop the pan - replace the filter and then pump fluid out? The first way seems more logical to me.

Yes, the transmission pan will only have a small amount of fluid in it and will be less messy to remove.

On my 89 it had sat for 3 months and I noticed a leaking tranny filler tube seal. So, I dropped the pan to replace the seal. Put 4 quarts in. Then later on I started it up and had to put in almost a total of 7 quarts to get it filled up. If the car sits, will more fluid come out than 5 quarts?

get it all out at home, there will be old fluid in the torque converter, valve body, etc.

I would suggest going to an Aamco type place that has special equipment to purge and replace all of the fluid -- probably runs about $100 but it just isn't something you can do yourself.
