Background info: '91- dimmer rod stuck- multifunction stalk loose, so I've had no control over low/high beam. Fog lights worked.
After HID headlight install my high beams were on, so I took off kick panel and manually activated the dimmer switch by hand. It clicked but the high beams would not turn off. I've read other threads about the fog lights disabled when the high beams were activated.(they used to work like that).
Now, I was stumped because my foglights don't function at all.... but here's the WEIRD part. When messing around with the foglight button I realized the button to turn the foglights on/off was really controlling the low/high beams.
So, now I don't have foglights, but I do have low/high beam useability via the foglight button. My question is: If I upgrade my foglights to HID, can I wire them up separately in order to keep the factory foglight button working the low/high beams?
This is a common problem when upgrading to HID's. The lights are all connected somehow. I went with hi/low HID's. The stock hi/low switch works fine with them. I did however lose the use of my foglights. There is a fix for this somewhere around here. My new HID's are working so good I havent even bothered fooling with the fog lights yet.

wire a 194 bulb on the same circuit as the high, and one on the low. so that when you turn the headlights on, it will illuminate a 194, and when you put the brights on it will illuminate the other 194. this gives the resistance back to the circuit.
the car needs the resistance to work properly, and the hid ballast doesn't have that resistance.

Intersesting. I have an HID hi/low kit. My passenger side light started going out every few weeks. They only way to get it back on is to pull it out and pull the light in and out a couple of times. I notice the last time I was fooing with it that there is a noise every few seconds where it sounds like the light is trying to pop out again. What is this? Is that how the hi/low's work. Any ideas? I usually only leave it set to low beams.

from OP:
Are you talking about hooking the 194s up to the side not plugged into the HID controller? I might lose the ability to activate my highbeams with the foglight switch. I'd like to hook up HID foglights separate from the factory lighting system and use my fog light switch to change from low to highbeams. That is how it's working now. The rod in the column from the stalk to the switch is stuck and I cant free it without taking off the steering wheel.
