You should have an EGR solenoid valve located on the right rear corner of the intake manifold. Two vacuum lines connect to the solenoid. One goes to the EGR valve and the other to the bottom of the throttle body. If vacuum is disconnected from the EGR, it will throw a code. If a vacuum line is disconnected and not plugged, that will cause some performance issues.

There should be a vacuum line sticker under the hood, fan shroud?, that shows what vacuum lines go where. The line being off would cause the code, but I don't think it would make your car barely drivable.
