87 ignition switch
I have an 87 Vet with a startup problem. Some times when I try to start the engine there is no fire after cranking the engine for two seconds. Then I will do it again and usually it will start. I have put my timing light on it and watched during cranking. When the light starts to flash, the engine fires right up. I figure I have a ignition switch going. Has anyone removed and installed a new ignition in one of these series. I don't want to remove the steering column. I will welcome advice and comments.

The ignition switch is on top of the steering column behind the instrument panel and is actuated by a rod from the ignition lock. You do not have to do anything to the steering column.

Voltage test at BAT
I have not hooked the volt meter to the BAT terminal during cranking. I assume that an inductive timing light not flashing during a two second cranking. Then crank for teo more seconds with no timing light flash and on the third try the light starts to flash and immediately starts up just fine. I can drive the Corvette all over town with no problems at all. Maybe I am missing something.
Anyway, Can the steering column be dropped to gain access to the ignition switch?
