When ever code 34 would come on the car would spit and sputter and run like crap. I would shut it off and restart it and if the light went out it would run strong.but now the code stays there and you feel like you are not going to get home.i ve replaced what seems like everything.fuel pump, filter, new wires cap rotor aic,tps sensor, egr valve, repaired vaccum hoses, gear on distibuter ,coolant sensors, mass air flow sensor,i switched ecu and ended up switchin it back, reset idle by the book.i have not been able to enjoy this car in a whole year. I m not to far from driving it over a cliff, i guess you can tell i m getting desperate. Any help would be appreciated
How does it run with the MAF connector, removed ?
I don't have any diagnostic info for the bastard 85 MAF system, hopefully someone will be able to get it to you, so you can diagnose if it's the MAF module or the MAF or the wiring.
Considering the investment you've made in parts I'd consider purchasing a cable and scanning software to read the engine parameters. The additional data may indicate where the problem truly is. You may have repplaced a bad part with a bad part or the problem is in the interconnects (harnessing and connectors). I'm currently trying to troubleshoot intermittent Code 24 and Code 34 problems on my '86. Based on the FSM guidance I think a scanner may help isolate the cause.
It looks like they bundle some freeware/shareware with the cable. I have not received my cable yet so I will not swear to the effectiveness of my solution.
Hey Ray It's J. here! How many Maf sensors have you tried? I had similar problems with my '85 and the 4th. one in 6 months was the right one! Good thing there is a year warranty on them. It's been 15 months since number 4 Maf and all is well. Good Luck!
J,i am courias how exactly did your car act and how often.this car does this after you shut car off and restart it, then the light comes on and then it barely runs, except right now the light is on all the time and the car is not drivable.
Here's the history Ray... Went to start the car at work idle went from 200 rpms to 1400 back and forth while shaking like a hula babe.Check engine light on. Checked for codes, got a 34. Knew it was a MAF code. Checked the TPS and IAC
both were operating correctly according to the FSM.Thanks for the link AGENT 86! Replaced MAF, car was purring, went to test on highway as soon as overdrive kicked in the car was lurching wildly. Parts place had the brains to order 2 as they said MAF's are a crap shoot with the non existant quality control these days. 2nd. MAF in, everything perfect! 6 months later same thing
again! Exact same symptoms. 3rd. MAF in all is well. 2 months later...
Didn't I go thru this a little while ago? 4th. MAF in and now it's been 15 months and all is well. I suppose I could start a thread about how replacement parts Suck these days but I know I've read threads like that on this forum! Oh! take apart all the electrical connections you can find in your engine . Inspect, spray with electrical contact cleaner, reattach. Clean and spray all of the grounds you can find too. I've been doing that every few months since MAF #4.
