It certainly wont do it any favours if its old and the plastic has gone brittle, and there is no need to hit the knock sensor anyway.

Passenger side of the block, in the middle, just above the oil pan gasket. It is hiding behind a plate that bolts to the pan. Plate is kinda shaped like a triangle.

The knock sensor replaces the water jacket drain plug on the right side of the block. It is just above the oil pan rail and forward of the starter. When you locate it, you may understand one reason not to strike it with anything, access.

I hate it when you reach up there and coolant runs down your arm and runs in your ear while looking the other way !

Mechanics don't make near enough !
Of course they don't have to lay on their back with the Dog licking on their belly and the hydraulic jack sinking in perceptively.

Anything is possible. Underneath is easier. Try it from the top, and let us know how it worked out.

I am replacing water pump, opti, etc this weekend. I have a '94 with 73,000 miles. I will start by draining old antifreeze and flushing engine with distilled water. How important is it to remove KS in order to remove ALL the antifreeze? My main concern is disturbing something that is 16 years old, currently working, and not leaking. Or, does it make sense to replace KS at this time?

Remember the joke about the gynecologist or was it proctologist? He got tired of his profession and decided to take up auto mechanics. At the end of the engine rebuilding class he found he got 150% on the test. He asked the instructor how he got it

Student: I built the engine back like everyone else. It worked. How did I get 150% on the test
Instructor: Well everyone did the same but you did it thru the exhaust pipe.

Here is an easy way. Plug in a scanner and take it for a run. Rev the engine up. If it sees small knock counts, the sensor works.
