I was changing to a new exhaust system Sunday, Corsa with a Magnaflow direct fit free flow catalytic converter, (1987 C4) Well the magnaflow was all wrong, what was marked the top was the bottom, The air tube was on the wrong side, when I flipped it over to get the air tube on the right side it was two inches too short. Magnaflow said if I was not happy,,, send it back, It's on the car now, It took hours 6 hours to install the new exhaust, laying on my back under the car, Backed up on my ramps, with very little room to work. I guess I will take it to a muffler shop today, and see what they can do to fix things, Besides it hangs too low. MAGNAFLOW SUCKS.
Any ideas how to extend the air tube?
Sounds like you should be able to get it exchanged and definitely sounds like the wrong cat in the first place. One a shop goes to cutting, welding or modding it, it's yours.
As far as connecting the air tube, you could try some high temp rubber hose and hose clamps. I had that on my 87 and it would last for about 5 years before needing replacing. The shop should know what to do anyway.
Why would it hang too low? There is (or should be) a factory bracket at the square flange that holds up the front portion of the rear pipe and the Y-pipe. The bottom of the cat should sit pretty much even with the bottom of the floor pans or no more than an inch below it.
Is the Y-pipe installed correctly? The ball and socket mounts at the exhaust manifolds should allow for lots of height adjustment once you loosen up the mounting flanges.
Might see your car around town once you get the exhaust issues sorted out!
I know a lot of the cats sold as "replacements" for the early c4 cats require you to use some high temp rubber hosing to connect to the air tube. If you look at Mid america or any of the other websites they sell the hose in addition to the cats.
