Default Need Front Brake Pad Thickness

from the backing plate to the pad surface on new pads for the 88 and up twin piston PBR. Does anyone have a new set of pads they can measure for me?

That is a strange request...can I ask why you need to know?

I'm guessing that you are replacing the pads and you are having trouble fitting the new ones over the rotor and now you wanna know if the pads they gave you are too thick....

Just guessing.

But not that it helps much, I have a new pad for an '84 right here and the pad portion is .367" and the over all thickness is .572"

Exactly, I got some PFC 93 race pads; they look thick and they don't fit.

Are your old ones really used up? I'll explain

Usually pads are used up in degrees. One pad is all gone whereas there may be one that is only half used up. So throw away the worse worn pad and then find the one that is used up the least.

Use one old pad for a while.....drive 500 miles and then pop it open and drop the new pad in there. PIA I know but hey....it's a labor of love...

Funny you mention it, after quite a few years of this not happening to me, I just recently had this happen last month on my fronts. That is why I had a new '84 pad "just lying around" here to measure for you.

If the pads are not fitting correctly and you have the j55 brakes one of the "fingers" could have been bent when installing the pad in the caliper. Or you didn't get the pad completely set in the caliper. Or you didn't get both cylinders all the way down.

This is what I am thinking also. I have had pads real tight on initial installation.

Open the bleed valve if you haven’t done already as you push the pistons in. If your not using a tool like a “C” clamp to really get the pistons in all the way, you might have that problem. They can be a real tight fit if all is not set up perfect.

Thanks to everyone for the tips and advice; I just came upstairs from measuring the pads and believe it or not, they measures out 19mm from the backing face to the surface of the pad. I thought it was a great deal on Ebay for $25, so I guess I now know why I took jhammons01's advice as I had some worn PFC 93's and used 1 new pad and 1 old one and got it to fit. The minor downside is that I will have to do a quick pad change at the track next time out. I just got back from Thunderhill where I was using PFC 80's(their first racing compound, an Ebay $35 special) and they were terrible, just no friction(no fade and moderate wear) my foot just about went thru the floorboard!

I remember, they make short pistons, for race applications, and your pad may be designed for the shorter pistons.

I am sure you are correct, that makes a lot of sense. Thanks for all the prompt replies.
