Default Zip 3.54 Diff & question (pics)

Well, here it is - just arrived today. :D Only thing is this... I noticed some small cracks at the back of the housing (you can see them in the front and closeup shots). :( Are these normal for a reconditioned housing or should I send 'em back and get a replacement?

I had the same question when I bought mine. I took it to a buddy of mine who rebuilds transmissions (to get the yokes installed, and by the way have fun doing that) and he said it was casting marks. The one I took out of the car had them as well. But just to be safe I would get hold of Justin as well.

I haven't seen a C4 differential without them, yet.

My wife's Acura TL has it all over the transmission housing and the pan. It's had these what looks like cracks since the car was new.

Those are casting marks in the housing. You can't do anything about them and all of them have them. They will not hurt anything and that housing is not any weaker because you can see them. It is just the way that Dana cast them.

Sounds good guys - thanks for the info. I emailed Andy (guy who I coordinated the purchase through) just to make sure. Now for those yokes...

Spoke with Justin at Zip and he did confirm the fact that they are casting marks and there's nothing to worry about! Now to get this thing in! :)

This is a direct result of the casting process. When you take a molten metal and inject it into a mold under pressure, the mold is alot cooller than the molten aluminum, thus the aluminum literally freezes to the interior of the mold. These are normal surface shrinkage cracks that are very superficial (not deep). This is removed in the machining process where a part has a tight fit-up tolerance, and is therefore never seen in a machined part. The interior of the differential case, however, whwre you have noticed the casting surface shrinkage cracks is a non-machined location. This is a perfectly normal condition in an unfinished surface of an aluminum casting :)
