Default Do the screen protectors for the radiator work?

Does anyone have any experience with the screen that covers the area that the radiator and A/C condenser draw the air from?

In Richard Newton’s book, “101 Projects for Your Corvette 1984-1996”, he mentions all sorts of mischief may occur because the C4 is a bottom breather and can pick up a lot of debris which can clog up the radiator and A/C condenser causing overheating or failure.

I am wondering if this is a solution to that problem, or does the screen restrict airflow enough that it in itself causes overheating? Mid-America has the screen for $59.00, reduced from a ridiculous $129.

I saw it for the C4 in the MA paper catalogue yesterday. It was a very small blurb. If I had not been looking for it I would have missed it. It said it would use existing bolts.

I'd love to have that part # also because after cleaning it out a couple of months ago I realized alot of the stuff could have been kept out with a screen.

Its home made and keeps the big stuff out.
Still need to clear out the small stuff annually.

Vette Jockey,

Installed one our our 2000 C5 and have not needed to clean the front of the AC Condenser since...

Also have one for our 94 C4, but waiting to pull radiator for a super clean or replacement, before installing it.

Got both from either Ecklers or MidAmerica.

One is made from stainless steel and the other aluminum. Prefer the stainless steel one as it is less sharp, but admittedly, the aluminum one is easier to shape.

I put one on my '85 and it stops all kinds of crap from getting into the front fan & radiator area. However, if you are the least bit handy you can save some money. I made mine with a pair of wire cutters and a piece of gutter cover screen from Home Depot. Total cost was under $2. This is the same screen I and others here on the forum made our side gill inserts from. One piece is all you will need and the cost isn't much over a buck.

This project is on my list. Seems simple enough to save some $ for other issues and upgrades.

Had a BIG leak in the radiator and had to replace it so I know it is clean and would like to keep it that way

Midnight 85, this sounds like a good project. I will have to get under the car this weekend to figure it out. Is there a thread for the grill inserts. That sounds great, too

kimmer and megtom2 here is the info:

I bought a piece of screen from Home Depot and used existing screws to hold it in place. You should have seen what came out of there when I installed the DeWitt Rad. Now, no problems with junk being sucked up from the road and it isn't even noticed unless you get down to look for it.

It's not hard, just get under there with a pair of snips and wrenches to loosen the air dam bolts, that's where it attaches. The gill screens were covered by a couple members, myself for one but I can't find any of the how-to threads now. Maybe someone saved it and can provide a link. I just took the lower fender pieces off and laid them on a towel, then started experimenting with cardboard until I found the shape then cut the shape out of the screen and used the quick set J-B Weld to secure them to the fenders. That was three years ago and they still look good. Here's the only pic I kept.

I made my own, and installed them on both of my C4s. I used the gutter screen material from Home Depot, too. It has worked extremely well for me to keep debris out of the condenser and radiator. I wouldn't own a C4 without adding one of these.

Here are a few photos of the first-article prototype I fabbed and installed on my '94. I've since replaced it with a second try that worked out even better, and I also painted that one flat black. It's nearly invisible.

Live well,
