Default Rear tire rotation

With 1 tire on the ground and car in park, how far should I be able to turn the tire off the ground?

I have gone threw 3 sets of u-joints and not cheap ones and 1 half shaft.
It all started w/driver side going out, I have replaced all 6 u-joints and am starting to think there is something else wrong.
And I have replaced both hubs, seperate problem but linked and I have about about a 1" - 1 1/2" rotation on the drivers side, wondering w/175k+ if the rearend might be causing this?

I have a 2300 stall converter that was put on about 4-5k miles before this all started when the tranny was rebuilt. Didn't find out that gem till long after the tranny was rebuilt.

Also, the driveshaft turns about 1/3-1/2" while turning the tire.

With one side of the car on jackstands, engine off, tranny in park, wheels chaulked, get under the car on your back and rotate the tire in the air. The tranny will have some slop as will the rearend. Some is normal, some is wear. There should be NO movement from the ujoints. If there is, start replacing again.

Sounds like your posi is worn out. At 100k I rebuilt my Dana 36. It was so worn, it was not really a posi any more. If you do a hole shot on the street, you should have a pair of matching black lines to show for it. In my case the driver side showed up as weak.

Did yours clunk into gear and when the car shifted gears?
Mine does.
How much did it cost to get yours fixed?
If you dont mind me asking or is there a kit or parts I can get.

Thanks guys!!

No clunk. You may need to look at gears. Just an occasional one wheel peel for me. I bought the posi clutch set from Ikerds. I dont remember the cost, maybe $150 ?? There is a special tool needed to compress the clutch pack on reassembly. Nobody around here had it. I made one from bolts and washers. pain in the butt, but I got it done. All day job, maybe 2 if you dont have the right tools. May be better to buy a low mile third member if the gears are shot.

A worn posi clutch pack will not necessarily cause play in the rearend. That would be a result of gear wear. A worn posi will allow for 1 leggers during launch.

Does anybody sell gears in the 3.07 range, I have seen 3.54 and 3.73.
How hard is it to rebuild the rearend and what do I need?

^^Many D36s come in 3.07. Keep your eye open for people throwing out a D36 with 3.07.....happens all the time. Every one with a D36 wants a D44.

Will any year C4 rearend work in my car?
Strange that nobody sells stock gear ratios, would think there would be a market for them.

There is a place that sells an upgrade.....you send in your Rear and they beef it up and put what ever gears you want in there.

But if you don't care about running a D36 (nothing wrong with the D36) just sit back and relax until you find one for cheap.

The rebuild is ~$1200

I would rather rebuild my own, I did find 3.07 gears. At GMpartsdirect, but they are $552.00 and 2.59 are 489.00, but atleast I know they are out there.
Does anybody know of any how-to websites?
