I am going to be replacing my distributer soon and my manual states that I should mark the shaft at the top but it does not say any thing about what to do to a new one. Do I have to set rotor in a certain spot or what? Thanks for the help.
You don't have to mark a place to put it back on.. the sindle that connects the gear in the opti to the gear of the timing gear has a notch in it and there is only ONE way it can go in.. DO NOT FORCE IT! if you get it the right way, you'll know because it will slip in. I tapped mine in with a little hammer and found that I put it in wrong! .. luckily i had another spindle and I didn't break the timing gear.
Here's another way. Put the drive shaft (spindle) into the cam without the opti. Just keep rotating it (skip/slight push) until it slips in...as they said, without forcing it, it will only go in one way (look at the end of it...you'll see one tooth bigger than the other...the female version in the opti and the cam is the same only reversed). Once you've got it slipped into the end of the cam...mark 12 noon on the shaft with something. Remove the shaft. Go back to your new opti, put the other end of the shaft in (as above)...rotate it to 12 noon. Now..both the opti and cam are in the same firing position. Put the shaft back in the cam (should be easy now...it goes in a noon remember)...then gently install the opti onto the shaft. You may have to rotate the opti a teeny bit one way or the other to make it slip on (slip is the key word) unless your eye is better than mine.
Before I did mine, I struggled with the thought of messing up a brand new $360 part. It turned out to be a snap for me. Are you venting it? If not, you might want to read Corvette Fever Feb.01 to figure out how. I can help you with that also if you want (there is a slightly better way).
