Torque Question
Yesterday I changed my rear main seal, the book says the rear main cap should be torqued at only 12 foot lbs. This seems low to me. Would some of you check your books and tell me if this is correct. I would hate to start driving it and find out to late it was a typo in the book. Thanks

My Helms manual for my '84 says to install the rear main bearing cap to 10-12 ft lbs. Then pry the crankshaft forwards and backwards to seat the thrust bearing, which is in the rear cap. The final torque on the main bearing caps is 80 ft lbs. Yours wasn't a mis-print, you just didn't go far enough. Good thing you asked.
