I'm looking at a possible purchase of a 1996 coupe with six speed.
It has the F45 real time damping suspension. How does this work
and how does it compare to the Z51?
Any help would be gereatly appreciated. Thanks
It's nice to be able to change the settings....but I don't know how expensive the replacements are when they eventually go as I can't find them anywhere!!!!!
Replacement shocks for the F45 can be had from Jeff Kopp (18carfan). His number: 1-800-728-8267...... He got me a set about 1 year ago for ~$500 if memory serves. They (unlike the FX3 shocks) can NOT be rebuilt.
The main difference between FX3 and F45 is that on the F45 system, each wheel and shock is controlled independantly from the rest. On the FX3, if the system need to stiffen one side, all 4 would be adjusted the same. Not so on F45. I changed mine out with ~75K on them and there was a very noticeable difference on ride quality and handling.
I know on the 96 it seems to really make a difference between the modes. I had read on previous years that you couldn't tell. But on my 96 I do feel a major difference between touring and performance. Most of the time I keep my setting on Sport. Anyway, the moral of the story is that it is worthing getting it on the 96 model year.
The 96 in any mode is no where as stiff as the Z51 package. The stock springs on the 96 are very soft in comparison. I changed out mine to vette brakes sport springs.
