You have to remove the entire doorsill carpet assembly to get to the front speakers. The carpet on the doorsills is glued to a plastic backing and the front speaker covers are bolted to the carpeted doorsill assembly.
There are screws on the door sill where the door closes (3 or 4 I think), you also have to remove the plastic piece at the back of the door opening just above the back of the door sill. Then just pull up the carpeted doorsill at the back and pull it out. There might be some sticky, black goop that GM put on at the top of the speaker assembly underneath the carpet doorsill so you might feel some resistance at first.
Here is a picture of the passenger side of my '90 ZR-1 with the doorsill/front speaker cover assembly removed (you can see the black stuff at the top of the speaker):
