ok. i have a 1992. Everyone reccommends getting an opti with a vented cap however the only one availible for a 92 is the MSD which from what ive read isnt that great. Will an opti II work on my 92? I guess since i plan on doing an electric water pump a non vented cap is that big of an issue. im on a very tight budget. Is the jegs opti I any good?
The GM vented opti from later years will not work on your 92 without changing a lot of other parts such as the timing chain cover. My feeling on opti's after reading lots of posts is that if you have a later model car, stick with the GM, for an earlier one, either modify the GM cap yourself to be vented or go with an MSD or Dynaspark.
That is just my gut feeling, there is no clear cut answer to this, lots of people have had good luck with MSD or Dynaspark or GM and others have had not so good luck. If you search, you will find that there was a poll not long ago. There is even a thread lately of someone advocating for a $75 ebay opti as a good solution. No clear cut right answer to this question.

This could not be more true. For every 1 person that had a problem with a MSD there are probably 5-10 that had no problems at all.
I have had the MSD unit on my car for over a year now with no issues what so ever.
It comes as a vented unit with all hardware needed to install the unit, plumb the vaccum with one exception........... there is a wiring pigtail that you will need to plug it into your OEM harness on the 92 (not sure on the other years).
Like I said, I've had one for awhile and I would / will buy another in the future.

So that's a 10-20% failure rate. I'll pass on the MSD opti. I've seen many MSD failures on the camaroz28 forum. But, most of these might have been early production units.

Buy the GM vent kit update for your 1992 Opti. Easy to install, works great. Buy the AC Delco Opti. Worth the extra $$ over the cheap ones.

Reason: update
Decent reading. I would suggest reading it and deciding from there. If you get a msd unit , check it and install it , chances are very slim you will have issues with it.
If ur on a tight budget, why mess with it at all?
AC Delco does not mfgr these; Delphi does or whoever in China now does.
From what I've gathered the $75 ebay part should be OK for stock replacements

I'll play along - how long do you intend to keep the car?
How long did your OEM opti last?
Are you Handy with working on cars? Ever replaced a waterpump?
If this is a "weekend" car then the cheap opti replacement is probably a good bet.
If you are handy and don't mind pulling a waterpump the cheap opti may work.
If you never want to do it again - get the MSD, open it up make sure everything is tight, reseal it, install it and a new waterpump and forget about it for a long time.
