Default Cat. converter question

The screens in my cats are bad and detiorating. Also I am in the midst of an engine rebuild and ruined my passenger side AIR Tube that goes to the exhaust header when I pulled the motor.
My question is since I want to gut my converters there won't be a need to run the plumbing for the Fresh Air Emessions tube (not sure of it's correct name). Is this correct thinking? I was told all it does is put more air in the exhaust to heat the converters for proper emissions. Or does it also effect the readings of the O2 sensors?
I plan on keeping my the rest of my EGR system intack. Also I live in IN. and there is no emessions testing or inspections of any sort.

you'll throw a code, I forget which one, for weak converter, and your service engine soon light will be on.

That's right I forgot about that. If I replace my AIR Tube and still gut the converters will it throw the same code? I am going to have my computer tuned so removing this code would be an option?

I was going to stuff them with my wifes tampons, that way it will still scrub the air and smell April fresh wouldn't it?

Not sure about you'r set up...on mine the exhaust tube on the passenger side (feeds) the EGR, and is also connected to the air injection system.

Are the hassles going to be worth less, then by, you just reusing the cat's, or even buying new.

Removing the cat will NOT kick a engine light on,thats only on 96 up cars as they have a down stream 02.Also you can leave the air tubes as they have 1 way valve in them.
I also live in indiana and pull cats off almost everything i own,if you dont someone else will

ps dont gut the cat, hell ill give you $50 for it if its not all broke up inside,a gutted cat will flow less and you can find muffler shops to put in a 3" test pipe, just tell them its a drag car.You have the front cats anyways

So, Don, lemme make sure I am reading you correctly. You are worried about "dirtying up" the air....all the while driving a Vette from the 80s?

If you look inside the cat, you'll be able to look right through it.

Gutting it won't help. The Screens in there get glowing red....and your unburned hydrocarbons are still very excited (AKA hot) when they are traveling down the exhaust pipe.....but they are still attracted to a warmer surface...so the molecules are bouncing all around and off of each other....and then the bounce against those red hot Cat screens and convert (aka burn) into something else......

So the screens aren't necessarily a fish net stretched across the stream catching fish/unburned aromatic hydrocarbons...but more like a bright light on a summer day attracting moths.

Gutting the cat will take a few hours and really not do anything.

I bought my 92 with the converters gutted and everything else intact.
Car would always "pop" on downshifts.

Found a set of lightly used cats from a similar car and replaced the gutted ones. Now the car only "pops" on really cold days before it warms up.

When I put on the long tubes I'll be putting cats on.

Now if I had one that had the precats in the front Y and the large main cat I'd get rid of the precats and make sure the main was good.

I looked in my cats and all I could see was a brick like screen that was deteriorated. It didn't look like it was ever a strate shoot through. I will probably replace them, my exhaust pops now with flowmasters and no resonator. I did just pickup a magnaflow resonator which I will put on after motor build to help quite this beast down I got it with flowmasters on and thats the second set I have had on a vehicle, there just to much resonation at highway speed for me. Thanks for all your help guys. You to Don
