Default Is this normal? or how do you increase throttle response time?

my 1990 has since i have bought it, a little pause between when you mash the gas and when it kicks down. Its actually more of a pause on a slight kickdown then on a wot type of deal.....

question is .....is this normal ?.....i mean i know the computer takes some time to process signals and stuff......

how and can i get the car to perform better in regards to throttle response time?

any hints greatly appreciated..

thanks
jeff

Mine was doing that-- I had it scanned and it was 10 degrees retarded. Got it timed correctly and it pretty much leaves rubber on command. :D

You may also want to check the throttle position sensor for smooth linear operation and adjustment.

while you're at it, might as well check the fuel filter, lines, plugs, air filter, etc...

This kind of question can be misleading, so I will address a few different possibilities.

Starting from the category I am used to from my other car...If you car actually runs as normal, and you just want better response, say you are used to a 400+ HP engine with a double pumper carb on it...you may not be able to get the same throttle response without serious cash outlay...starting with a 52 or 58 MM throttle body ( which only makes it feel like it has more power...but really makes little HP difference ), a much bigger cam, headers, etc...

Also, the trans calibrations make a huge difference. The stock valve body really is sluggish...but it's made that way to provide comfortable shifts. If you put a shift klit in a 700R4, you will end up with a responsive trans that will beat you to death! For some reason, the valve body design is crap, and you can never get as good a shift quality/response as a TH350 can give...thats the only part that really sucks about this trans.

NOW.....If you car does not run as well as normal, and you feel a slight hesitation or even a hiccup, right off idle, then it's most likely you need to remove the throttle body and clean it, maybe open the min airflow a little ( which usually is reduced by carbon buildup. ) Other than that, normal tune items make the difference in all around performance, like timing, plug condition, O2 sensor, etc...etc....
