Anyone have any clearance issues with aftermarket roller rockers on their PML Centerbolt Corvette Script Valve Covers?
I just got mine this week and as I put one of them on my ZZ4, I noticed how tight they seemed with very little clearance.
I put one on very carefully and then cranked it up. At first I heard what sounded like the roller rockers (Scorpion 1.6 & 1.5's)hitting the cover. I quickly turned it off, removed the cover and looked for metal marks or shavings. Nothing...I thought maybe I was being paranoid!
I put them back on and started up again. This time, I was positive they were rubbing, but after about 1 minute the sound stopped. I thought then I started hearing a small / faint squeal like a belt problem. I quickly shut it down again and removed them.
Sure enough, 3 of the 4 rockers that skirt the internal baffles were rubbing the baffle wall. I've sent PML an email, but it will be Monday before I hear back.
that skirt the internal baffles were rubbing the baffle wall. .
When running rollers on stock centerbolt covers people squeeze the baffles in and sometimes have to grind the sides of the casting where the hold down bolts go through for clearance
It's got to be the covers you're running because both my 96 388 LT1 and my son's 96 LT1 are running Scorpions (1.7/1.7 - 1.7/1.65) and they all clear.
Here's the skinny though: My son is running stock 96 covers without any mod to them at all. They dropped right on and are even using stock gaskets. He's running Dart Pro1s.
However, I'm running AFRs which have slightly taller valves. In my case the stock 96 covers wouldn't drop down all the way, although the ROCKERS cleared, the poly locks hit the underside of the covers. So I had to move to 1/4" taller ProForm covers.
But, yes, just squeezing the baffles should give you the clearance you need.

Alright, I've ground down the baffle walls. On the last trial, it appeared that only one side was just barely rubbing. I took them off one more time and gave each one a quick grind. I put it back on, but I still see the smallest of scratches from one or two of the roller rockers shoulder edges. It looks like a knife scratch.
Am I over paranoid or should I just let it go and run with them?

Hell, why give up now? You're almost there. Grind, bend, whatever it takes. Don't get timid on us now, LOL. Have at it!

If I remember the insides of PML Centerbolt Corvette Script Valve Covers the baffles seem to be thick so I would just grind off what I need in order to have clearance.
