Default running rich

!989 C4 I installed long tube headers. I removed pre cats and middle cat and installed flowmaster 40 series mufflers. The problem I have is it running very rich (LOTS OF SMOKE AND GAS FUMES TO THE POINT THAT YOU CAN NOT START IT IN THE GARAGE)

It may be because of the O2 sensor location on your new headers. If you had to move the O2 sensor farther away from the motor it may not be getting hot enough to work properly..If this is the case you either have to move the 02 sensor to the original distance from the head or use a heated O2 sensor. If the above is not the problem you could have a air leak above the 02 sensor that is giving the sensor a false reading causing it to dump more fuel to compensate for the extra air....WW

do you have a scanner to see if they are working? I think, when they fail, they go rich.

But I would bet on an exhaust leak being the problem.

Also from what I read & learned on this forum it wouldn't be a bad idea to get a tune. Also your exhaust will not be as clean & will polute more since cats are removed.
