We are getting an EGR check engine code on a 90 model.. Is it possible that a stopped up PCV valve could cause this? Or does this def mean the EGR valve is bad? I was thinking a vacuum leak could also be the culprit.. The code is intermittent. Fuel mileage seems low @ 21-22. All highway 60mph Baby footing it.
I agree with WW7. If it rattles, it's good. I'd just go ahead and replace the EGR (I don't know of a way to test the EGR valve). Then erase the codes. Run it and see if it shows the EGR code, again. I would think a "bad EGR valve" would affect gas mileage. It's part of the pollution control system.
gmboileau is right. There is more to it than just the EGR valve. That was the first thing I thought of. So, that came out of my mouth and a slice of "humble pie" replaced it. He's right.

PCV has no relation to EGR.Two seperate systems
EGR operation is controlled by the computer ; PCV works all the time by engine vac

If engine is not getting to correct temp then it will affect lots of things as many engine functions are heat sensitive ; there are settings that turn on / off dependent apon engine temp
