Default I'm almost screwed

Pardon the pun, but it seems like the screw that holds the VSS in on my ZF6 extension housing is almost stripped. I think another 1/4 turn and it'll be gone. The sensor is in there nice and tight and, I put some blue loctite on the screw itself and it seems to be holding well. One part of me says leave it alone because it's job is to hold the sensor in, which it is doing. However, I fear it won't stay that way once I go barreling down the road in the spring with all of the vibration, etc.

So, if I want to put a helicoil in there, now is the time because I have everything apart and the housing will come back off quite easily. I was also thinking of getting a slightly larger, coarser threaded screw to get just a little more bite. (like the ones that hold the ASR sensors in on the rear knuckles).

Any advice or suggestions?

Mike

I know it's pretty tight up there, so this may not be possible without dropping the transmission, but you could drill out the hole and use a tap set to thread it for the next size screw up (probably have to drill the screw hole that holds the VSS in bigger too). Or just use a helicoil like you said.

If it were me, I probably wouldn't just jam a screw in that isn't meant to be there though.

A helicoil of the original size will be stronger than the other 3 bolts holding the tailhousing on.
