Would you help explain to a non mechanic ... I thought detonation would put a hole through the top of the piston but the damage all seems to be to the side?

OK I see. This must do a heck of a lot of damage to the cylinder wall with those sharp edges. Is the whole block scrap now or can it just be honed out and a new piston & rings be installed?

by the looks of that piston the block is most likely trashed beyond repair
