I am getting ready to dive into the books and start researching for a motor in my 86. All I know is that I am going with the superram. I have to at least attempt to keep it emissions legal. I would like to see what you all have done and what products you have used.
Thanks
Doug
Your lucky in having a 86'..450hp will be no sweat..This would be my recommendation (having done this a few times) Pull that 350 out!..Get you a nice 400ci sb, Invest about 700-1000 bucks in a good set of already ported aluminum heads (brodix, dart, bow tie etc.) Put you a nice solid lifter or roller cam with mid 500's lift and you'll be there with out a dout :chevy
I am definately pulling the L98 out. Keep it in the garage or maybe throw it in a truck. I think it would make an outstanding off road motor with the torque and any angle fuel injection.
NO dyno time on mine yet, still tweaking, but think about a 383 stroker with your L-98 engine, with the ZZ4 cam, pretty impressive numbers on desk top dyno. Maybe AFR head's. Know that you are going to have to go DFI or FAST computer. I have heard that the FAST setup is easier to tune than DFI and has diagnositics where DFI does not. Good Luck
The bottom line on engines is it all boils down to $$$. The best bang for your buck is to just install a Lingenfelter top end kit; (Cam, Heads, Super-Ram intake...) This will give right around 400HP. If you are planning on doing a rebuild the next step is a cast bottom-end 383. This will cost around $6,000 for all the machine work, new rotating assembly, cam, heads, and intake. To do the same in Forged pieces will set you back around $8-$10,000. I tend to disagree with using an old 400 block. You'll have to have the thing hot-tanked, brushed, and machined. Probably around $1,000 when finished. You may as well just buy a new Dart or Mowtown II block and build a 427 or 434. The only problem with going to these hi-cubed motors is you'll need a new computer to handle the huge injectors, new cooling system, new clutch or tranny. The cost will set you back over $15,000 but get you over 600HP!!! Goes to prove that the power to dollars cost is exponential!!!
Are you asking for 450hp emmision legal engine or not?
Amazing I never see any worry about passing emmissions. Hmm..must be my state only or i just don't know anyone i can hand 20 bucks to to have my cars pass.. :D
