Default Starter Recommendations

Im sure this has been discussed somewhere before but I couldnt find a good thread. I need to replace the starter on my 89. Cant decide whether to replace it with $125-$150 stock type or go with a mini- or high torque- type from Summitt or Jegs. The prices arent that far off. The enginer is not stock, see profile. Thanks guys!

The "89" Vette comes stock with a mini starter.

Buy the stock mini starter manufactured by "Nippondenso" from NAPA Auto.

Is that supposed to be better than Delco? The PO gave me a new remanufactured Delco starter with my 89. Haven't had to use it yet though.

"88" was the first year with the gear reduction Nippondenso starter, Nippondenso made the OEM starter for GM.

When did they switch to Delco making them? Or does the dealer still sell the Nippondenso? I've never heard of that brand before. Just Delco.

Summit has them new for $110. I've got a used one I'd sell for $25 plus shipping (it should be rebuilt but does work fine).

Nippondenso manufactures them for AC Delco.

I don't know who made the remanufactured starter the PO gave me. But it does say Delco Remy and has the OEM part number on it.

I was looking on Autozone. And their Duralast remanufactured starter is made by Nippondenso. So, for $95, that sounds like a good deal.

Thanks for the input guys. I went to Autozone and was out the door for $95. Its a remanufactured Delco/Nippondenso. Bolted right on even with my long tubes. Works perfectly and im back on the road!

Cool, let us know how it holds up. Do you by any chance have a starter heat shield? Mine is stock, and I've read of people putting them on to protect the starter. But for the past 2 years, I've never had any problems with my starter.

The PO had the starter replaced in my 89 not too long before I bought it. And he also gave me one. Which I'm guessing is a Delco/Nippondenso rebuild as he said the dealer gave it to him as when they ordered the starter. They got two in, and gave him the extra one. Haha.
