What about those heads being chosen to be used in magazine engine builds? I see the same names over and over - AFR, Dart, Brodix, Trickflow, etc. Can someone point me to a site where they were used in an independent engine buid up?
Jake
I would also like to see AI, LE, ect heads competing in these comparisons. But, sadly enough magazine and Sat morning car shows comparisons are all about advertising $$ revenew.
There was a challenge offered here about a year or so ago (in the jsup days ) but noone ponied up. Member wesmigletz offered up his 62 and had numerous heads, intakes, etc done with track times, etc. Its been posted here and in a mag or two also. Ill shoot him a pm and see if he can give links.
I took the car back to the track on New years Day 2010. It was my first time driving it since July. This time we went to Fontana instead of Famoso. I literally emptied my crap from the trunk and went 12.14 @ 112.49. The car is still being held-back by it's 5400 RPM shift point, with the stock PG shifter left in D. The carb is the same 670 vacuum secondary Holley I used at the track last summer. The carb is too small. If I could get the shift points up, and/or a larger carb, the car would be deep in the 11s.
I became a believer in two things from this test: 1. HR cams rock (+30 HP vs a solid flat tappet), and AFR heads rule (+40 HP vs Dart 200 cc Pro1 Platinum Heads). I can cruise on 87 octane, get 19 MPG, and run 12teens, with the shifter left in D.
Kinda sad the Dart 200 CC Pro 1 Platinum Heads were only worth 12 HP vs my (then) 46 year old Camel Hump Heads.
Why is it we don't see independent dyno results of engines wearing heads offered for sale by the two names so often referenced? I'm specifically referring to AI and LE.
Most guys sing their praises, but where are the numbers - the results? Since our economic system is so based on competition, how do those two compare with the others?
There are tons of posts in the archives of the old F-body forum documenting results of both setups. Unfortunately there are also tons of childish pissing matches from idiots that like to argue for either setup. It's probably a conspiracy by both porters to boost name recognition and its worked pretty well too. All of the posts are individual tests though not a a real back to back comparison. I don't think either of these shops puts big money in advertising or sposerships like some of the big names. Most of the knowledge is spread by word of mouth or the internet.
