Default Thinking down the road.....

About doing my heads. Whatever I decide as far as heads go the engine is going to be left in the car.

My question is about the reverse flow cooling piping on the back of the cyl head. How is the best way to handle this? Can it be unhooked from the head before the head is removed (easily, it looks tight in there) or is it best to take both heads out far enough to remove it?

I always remove it before removing the heads. But, I guess you could loosen one side and remove it attatched to the other head. It's a little easier to get to with the intake off.

I've read numerous ways about "best way" to do this IMO there is more than one way to skin a cat. My prefered method for installing the steam tube is when engine is out of the car.

I've removed and installed the steam tube in the car and one SCRANAGE'S 92 I almost rang out trying to get the banjo bolt started on the second head....we switched the side we started on a couple of times too....Seems like decking the block, thinner head gaskets, and resurfaced heads made the crossover on the steamtube a RCH too long to easily start second banjo bolt.

Here are some of the methods I was told are the BEST

removing both heads with steam tube connected
remove steam tube, intake and then the heads
remove instake, team tube, heads.

IMO they all probably work, personally I don't see how removing both heads with steamtube attached is a benefit that outweighs the hassle but I never used that method so I can't honestly ding it....

Good luck, and if you want to see controversy start a best LT1 ported heads thread !

Thanks Mike,
If I had the engine hoist and stand I might take the engine out. I don't so I'm not feeling throwing about 500.00 down to get that equipment. Plus, I don't have the room for it. I'll have to try one of the methods you listed above. Thanks for the info!
