Just a question
I live in the east ( upstate New York)
I started my 1989 vette yesterday
and noticed that it only heated to 165 for about 15-20 minutes
is this ok
or do i need to replace termostat in the spring
I assume it should run around 185

You should have a 185° thermostat in there to begin with.

A lower temp thermo does not make your car run cooler (in summer) despite what many claim.

I live a few hours south of you and man is it cold Here. I could imagine how cold it is in Binghamton. I would say that is pretty normal. I just replaced the thermostat in my DD thinking I needed it but didnt. Its just damn cold.

Does it continue to run with that temperature when waiting at a stoplight?
Just let it idle a little longer than that, if it really stays that low, it could be a faulty thermostat.
If it´s an automatic, does it go into overdrive as soon as you hit like 45 mph?
If it has a hard time going into overdrive, it´s also a sign that it might be your thermostat.

Start the car and let it idle. The temp should reach about 185 or 195, depending on which thermostat you have. It may drop below that after the thermostat opens. You can tell when it opens because the upper radiator hose will get hot. If it only gets to 165 when it opens you have the wrong thermostat.

Maybe your thermostate is stuck in the open position or is stuck part way open, it shouldn't take 20 minites to reach 165 with the thermostate closed ..WW

195* t-stat for best mpg.
Air going through the rad (was the cooling fan running all the time?)is the only thing to keep the temp. down, I'm assuming the vette was idling the whole time.
