Default Wierd electrical problem (alternator?)

Have had an intermittant ground loop in the stereo (stock, but used to have a sub/amp which I took out) over the past few months that I haven't looked into much. Yesterday it was bad, so I was cruising with the stereo off and the lcd display would cut on and off every once in a while, the tach would jump and make a tick noise, and the motor would seem to hiccup real quick. When stopped and idling the car would almost stall and idle around 400 rpm, but was fine if I gave it a little gas. If I turned the stereo on, the lcd display (speedo) would blink off real quick.
Today it was running fine except the voltage was running from 13.9 - 15.5 not rpm dependent. It is usually right at 14.1 no matter what.
Could the alt (regulator) be causing all of this?

It's easy enough to have the alternator tested ... I would check the battery too. BTW what year are you driving?

Year is a 96 (in the sig). Battery should be good (1 year old). I think (fear) there may be a couple things going on. The alternator would be high on the list and easy enough to test / swap out.

Your alternator is NOT working properly as told by your dash voltmeter!
It could cause the problems you are experiencing. One way to prove it is to unplug the alternator and see if everything electrical works as it is supposed to.

I had these exact same symptoms.....first symptom to develope was the fluctuating voltage, just like you.

Next time out the car would not idle properly, trying to idle too low, just like you.

My problem was simply a loose connection at the battery terminal.

Hope yours is as simple as mine...put a wrench on it and snug it down..
