HELP!! My 86 was broken into from passenger side then they smashed the steering column jacket above the turn signal lever to reach the rod.
Any info or suggestions please!! I do have the original key and the ignition switch seems OK. Can the Vats be overidden? eliminated? Any help on rebuilding the top of the column is also appreciated!

There are 2 ways to bypass Vats,(1) You can buy the cable harness from one of the Corvette sites that goes inline under the stearing column, that goes for about $30.00.
(2) You can get a chip connection that goes between your ECM plug and the ECM that programs VATS out of the system, for about $65.00 to $125.00...With the chip converter you can also program things like EGR and air injection out of the system if you want to eliminate them, plus you can change what temps your radiator cooling fans comes on and go off. Before you go eliminating VATS just remember, thats probably why you still have your car...WW

If the ignition is still intact and you have the correct resistance key, VATS should still function. Are you having problems trying to start, now ?
Pull the kick panel above drivers feet and find the two wires from above the steering column that go to a 2 pin connector and unplug. If you connect a fixed resistor the same value as your key pellet resistance (must be within 4%) across the wiring harness socket, then you have effectively bypassed VATS. When you bypass VATS, then you have no protection from the 99% way thieves steal cars, they bash the column and jump the ignition. It is a much better idea to keep your VATS working!!!!!!!!!!!
