I have the same problem on my '93, although mine's a bit worse, I can't see my numbers at all.

From what I could find searching these forums and the internet, it's either a bad connection to the instrument panel or the panel itself is just bad. They apparently fade over time until they're unreadable.

I've seen rebuild service offered in various catalogs for about $300, and used ones on Ebay for $50-200. I'd try the connections first, and if that doesn't fix the problem, you're pretty much stuck with used or rebuilt.

Your LCD panel has UV burn. You live in the "Sunshine (UV) state" according to your profile. I'm guessing the car spends/has spent a good amount of time exposed to the FL rays. The 90 and Up C4 clusters are shaded better by design than the pre 90's versions so they are less sucseptible to UV burn...unless you have a convertible of course. Your best solution is a new LCD panel. In the future, if the car must be parked out outside/exposed to a UV source throw a towel over the cluster to protect it from the UV.

I found this link on the CAC forum. It's probably NOT the problem you're having, but the disassembly instructions and photos may help a little:
