I need to purchase a new rack and pinion unit for my 84, but there are two types listed: one for heavy-duty suspension, one for regular. The parts sheet (or whatever it's called) is missing from my car. Can this be derived from the VIN or some sort of visual cue on the R&P unit?
As far as I know the difference in the r&p is steering ratio. Cars with HD suspension had a faster steering ratio, I think both is a direct fit and would definitely go for the faster one.
Looking in my Corvette Black Book I can see that 1984 Z51 (HD suspension) also has an extra fan in front of the radiator and an engine oil cooler. Also has a 23mm rear anti-roll bar instead of a 20mm. If you have that your car is most likely a Z51.
If the orginal rack the cap on the bottom of the pinion shaft has a 2 letter code stamped on it.
I have listed
84-85 std coded WL and YM
84-85 H.D (Z51 ) as AJ, AK, YP
Either way as noted the faster steering HD rack is the better choice
Had similar questions when I changed mine in the 85. From my bench observations the standard rack is 2 1/2 turns lock to lock. The Z51 is 2 turns. Either will fit but the Z51 rack is more fun.
Thanks, guys, sounds like I can't go wrong as far as the fit and functionality of either. I'll snoop around and look for those clues or maybe just test it with the front end jacked up. Dave
