I have an 88 with the climate control(digital). What can the members tell me about this unit.Mine seems to want to stay on heat mode and sometimes the digital readout just dissapears. If I have to buy a new unit thats ok,but I would like to know more about this so I don't buy parts I don't need.
Some verry good info there, thanks. One thing I am trying to figure out is what are all the components of this system and what function does each part perform?I can't seem to get the heat to go to defrost and I have the display going nuts. The display sounds like an easy fix(provided in the previos post, thx again)but there is a module? The doors under the dash must be operated by vacume or solinoids?
For '88, the Display is the Processor and, but it sends signals to a postcard size device called a Programmer that controls vacuum/suction to 4 solenoids and power/ground to a motor that controls a Temp Door that controls air flow between the heater core and a/c evaporator. Those signals are dependent on what you dial in with input from the Outside (mounted on the Radiator) and Inside Temp Sensors (Rear hatch Bow above the driver's seat - Coupe). The Programmer is above and to the right of the accelerator. Remove the Hush Panel under the Dash on the Driver's side to access it. Three of the vacuum solenoids - Vent, Defrost and Heater - are on the lower/left side of the HVAC plenum, just to the right of the Programmer. A 4th solenoid is used for Recirc or Inside/Outside (below the windshield) air on the Passenger side Kick Panel. With your Controls on the fritz, that needs to be fixed first.
SunCR knows his stuff glad he chimed in on this. If you turn the unit "off" (and the power doesn't drop out") and it turns back on in "heat" (orange "heat" LED illuminates as well) mode could be as simple as stuck button/contact pad inside the faceplate unit. Often times when you remove 12V from the unit the fan will turn "on" by default....this is normal. You may very well have mulitple problems - for me it is best to work on one problem at a time.
