Default [Pic] '88 eClimate Control panel hot spot

Photo taken from a C68 forum topic: red oval added where the surface of the panel gets very hot to the touch. Is this normal? What's right behind there that is heating up?

It's summer here and I'm always using the air con and haven't been able to run without the air con, if that matters. Thanks for any input.

That is not normal....looks like it is melting from the inside. You may want to pull and inspect the unit before more damage occurs...those faceplate covers are $100+ to replace.

Thanks. The photo isn't from my car, actually it's taken from your post of Jan '09 (to get a good view). No damage to the faceplate on mine. Do you know what's right behind that area of the faceplate?

It has been awhile but if I remember right, there are 3 halogen bulbs that do the primary illumination ...to the best of my recollection none of those bulbs are within 1" of that spot circled in the pic....could be wrong though....the spot does look like it is being melted by the tip of a bulb that is too long in length though. There is really not much in the faceplate other than a small PCB with attached LED display, some contacts, bulbs & sockets. The bulbs do have some heat from producing light (to this point in technology there is no such thing as light without heat) but they shouldn't melt the face plate but it will warm it slightly when the faceplate is illuminated.

How much trouble is it to get the faceplate off without getting into a major production?

The unit must pretty much be removed....all the plastic bezels from the instrument cluster all the way to the console must be removed or lifted slightly to access it......so yes major production. Use care when tighening the screws for the bezels 20 + year old plastic is brittle and will crack or break if you stress it.
