Thanks Jim, now which one do I buy at transmissionhead.com?
55X or 55XX
When I run the calculator I come up with the 42 tooth driven gear, so that would mean you need the 55XX. See the note about needing the pigtail with that VSS, I'm guessing it is different from the stock connector so you will want that too unless you care to try finding one locally.
You should only need the 42 tooth driven and the VSS for your install. Your present drive is a match I believe. Don't rotate the VSS, just get the correct and I believe it's available still.
If your car is a high miler while you're doing the rear you might want to consider some light maintenance and replace the transmission extension bushing and seal or certainly the seal! U-joints if they haven't been done previously would also be a good idea.
I mentioned back in January you needed the 42 tooth only and the VSS for the 40+ driven gear. The 42 tooth is based on "rolliing radius" and the 44 tooth recommendation sounds like it's calculated with an advertised tire diameter. That's assuming you're still doing the 3.07 gear.
Regarding NAPA, you just need to go to a local store and not get involved in their Internet sales. An associate there can do more for you than any "Internet help/customer service rep"!! What NAPA part# did you assume you needed?
The 55xx would be the required VSS from transmissionhead.com. I'd be tempted to try a $5 "special" from them if they confirmed for you that it was for a 40+ driven gear! See #70
I made the same gear swap two years ago. I also went thorough the "search" for the VSS with no luck at all. No longer available at the dealer, NAPA, or anywhere elso I searched. So, at the advice of some knowledgeable forum members, I installed the 42 tooth driven gear and rotated the existing VSS 180 degrees. Works just fine. Clocked it with many other vehicles matching the speed to within a mph or two.
